Digital Out-of-Home Explained

Digital out of home, or DOOH, is advertising shown on digital screens in places people visit outside the home. It includes fixed screens and screens on moving vehicles. The digital format allows scheduled creative changes, but the available controls and evidence depend on the screen network and campaign package.

OOH and DOOH

Out-of-home advertising is the broader category. A printed billboard, a vehicle wrap and a digital screen can all be OOH. DOOH is the part delivered through digital screens; it is not a separate category that excludes digital billboards.

Mobility media describes media carried by vehicles. A taxi wrap is physical OOH, while a digital screen inside a taxi is both DOOH and mobility media. These labels describe different aspects of the placement.

How a Digital Campaign Runs

A campaign starts with the audience, locations, dates and intended response. The media plan specifies the supported screen format, inventory, creative requirements, scheduling and delivery conditions. A centralized platform can distribute approved creative and maintain delivery records for compatible screens.

MotionReach describes centralized creative control, scheduling, GPS and screen-level logs for its digital network. Confirm which features are included in the chosen inventory. A general DOOH feature is not proof that every screen supports it.

Creative for the Viewing Context

A street-facing screen and a screen in a taxi cabin are viewed under different conditions. Keep the main message legible, establish the brand quickly and choose a response mechanism that fits the audience's opportunity to act. Do not treat an average taxi journey as uninterrupted viewing time.

Confirm the latest media kit before production: screen dimensions, aspect ratio, file format, duration, audio conditions and approval process. A duration used in an example is not a universal technical specification for all placements.

What Programmatic DOOH Means

Programmatic DOOH refers to buying and delivering digital out-of-home inventory through automated advertising technology. It describes a buying method, not all digital screens. A campaign can be digital without being purchased programmatically.

If programmatic buying is part of the brief, confirm the available inventory, buying platform, targeting conditions and reporting with the provider. Do not infer availability from the word DOOH alone.

Read Campaign Results Carefully

Separate delivery, exposure and response. A playback log can confirm that creative ran on a screen. Audience impressions and reach require a stated method and reporting period. QR scans or offer-code use show a specific response, but do not by themselves prove a purchase or incremental sales.

For a mixed campaign, report each format appropriately. Physical vehicle wraps do not create screen playback logs, so their exposure figures may be estimates. Combining screen plays, estimated impressions and actual participants into one total can make the result misleading.

A Brief That Can Be Quoted

Provide the campaign objective, audience, priority areas, dates, budget range and available creative. Ask the provider to specify the screen or vehicle type, quantity, schedule, production scope, measurement method and any exclusions.

Choose the format according to its role in the campaign. Use taxi media for relevant passenger journeys, or review a wider OOH mix when the brief needs street presence and activation. Availability and launch timing should be confirmed for the actual campaign.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Digital Billboard DOOH?

Yes. A fixed digital billboard is a DOOH placement. DOOH also includes other out-of-home digital screens, including supported screens inside moving vehicles.

Does One Play Equal One Viewer?

No. A play is a delivery event. Viewer or audience figures require a separate definition and measurement method; the same person may have more than one opportunity to see the campaign.

Is Every DOOH Campaign Programmatic?

No. Programmatic describes a particular automated buying method. Confirm that the selected inventory and provider support it before including it in the plan.

Can DOOH Guarantee Sales?

No media format guarantees sales. Campaign response depends on the audience, message, offer, availability and the steps after exposure. Set measurable objectives and distinguish exposure from actual business outcomes.
