KOL vs KOC in Thailand

Mega influencers get the visibility. Nano creators get the trust. But which one actually moves product?

Illustrated guide to KOL vs KOC in Thailand

Every brief we receive these days asks the same question: KOLs or KOCs? After running 200+ campaigns across both, the answer is — it depends, but not on the variables most planners think.

Understanding Creator Tiers

In the Thai market, KOL (Mega/Macro) typically refers to creators with 100K+ followers. KOC (Key Opinion Consumer / Micro & Nano) refers to creators below that — often 1K–50K followers — who post like real consumers.

Where Each Tier Works

Mega KOLs win on reach, brand-association lift, and category awareness. Their content sets the cultural baseline. They don't convert directly — they make the brand mentionable.

Macro KOLs win on category authority. They're where consumers go for in-depth opinion. They convert best when the brand needs trust signals — beauty efficacy claims, financial products, anything where credibility matters.

Micro and Nano KOCs win on conversion. Their content reads as consumer recommendation, not brand placement. The trust is implicit. ROAS on KOC-led campaigns regularly outpaces KOL campaigns by 2–4x in our data.

Ask About Campaign Goals

Asking "KOL or KOC?" is the wrong frame. The right question is "what does this campaign need to do?" Awareness needs reach. Trust needs authority. Conversion needs community signal. The best campaigns layer all three.

Combine Creator Roles

Our top-performing creator architectures look like a pyramid: 1–2 Mega KOLs at the top for reach, 5–15 Macro KOLs in the middle for credibility, and 50–200 Micro and Nano KOCs at the base for conversion. The base does the selling. The top does the framing.
